Along with being able to tell the author what they can work on in a positive, it is also important to know what to look for while you are peer reviewing. If you don't give the author feedback on the right things, you won't be helping them improve their paper in the areas that they need to improve on.

I agree with what you said. I call it a compliment sandwich, you tell someone something they did good on, something they need to work on and then end it with something they did good again. 2 positives and 1 negative makes the person you are giving critiques to feel not as bad as a writer.

I agree that it is very important to know what to check for in peer reviewing. That is why I believe peer review forms are so helpful since they ask the reviewer questions that inspect all the pieces of the document. Positive feedback on the correct areas is essential in good peer reviewing.
