I think it is very important to be personally accountable for yourself no matter what you do. In the article the guy took responsibility for someone else's mistake and took care of it right then and there instead of blaming everyone else like the previous people have done. At that moment it was not his mistake but it was brought to his attention so therefore it became his problem and he became accountable for it and fixed it right away. Sometimes you have to be accountable for things that were not necessarily your fault but it may be your responsibility to fix. But if something is your fault you should hold yourself accountable no matter the outcome.
