I agree that there is a lot that a person can take away from participating in service learning experiences. When I was a freshman I did a service learning project through my quest class where I volunteered at an elementary school. I still remember it to this day because helping those kids made a big impact on me. However, I wonder if I would have similar feelings towards service learning if I had helped in a different way. I chose to volunteer at the elementary school because it is something I am passionate about. Through that, I have continued my volunteering at the school. I am not sure that I would have continued to volunteer if my project didn't align with my interests. Recently, my coach signed me up for volunteer work by helping to clean up an organization. I worked two hours helping to clean up and spent most of my time bleaching toys. I had no contact with people and it wasn't a very enjoyable experience. I honestly don't think I would go back unless my coach signed me up again. My point is, service learning is great experience, but only when the participant is excited about the service that they are doing.
